We don’t lose sight of her persona and characterization during the big action set-pieces, as Gadot demonstrates an ability - somewhat rare in action films, if we’re being honest - to continue performing in character while going through the synchronized motions of battles and spectacle. And Gadot clearly loves the role, relishing the many moments when she is able to fully embody those traits and live up to those themes. That, in the end, is truly Diana’s mission: to help us become the best versions of true selves, which is about much more than selfish pursuits and desires. She seems to most love what she does when she is not only saving or protecting people, but when she is inspiring them to be better to one another and to themselves. She approaches everyone with kindness and compassion - even her enemies. She smartly, intuitively embodies not only Diana’s warrior nature, but also her ambassador nature and her protective, nourishing nature. Gadot has proven one of the best examples of casting in superhero film history, alongside other definitive portrayals that have come to embody characters in our collective psyche, including Christopher Reeve, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Hugh Jackman. The first thing to say about Wonder Woman 1984 is this: It’s one of the best superhero sequels of all time, it’s epic scale with heart-stopping action and gorgeous visuals, bright and smart and funny, and it confirms Wonder Woman as the most relatable and cheer-worthy hero in the DCEU.
